Here are some pics of the house where we are currently staying. To read about our host family and all the work the wife does everyday in the house, go to the post here.
- The entrance to our house (there are four houses in this building)
- The view inside the house after entering; there is little more than the four bedrooms and the bathroom
- Looking back at the entrance/dining room/motorcycle garage. The door on the right leads to our bedroom.
- Our bedroom. Obviously we have little to complain about.
- The bathroom, complete with instantaneous water heater on the shower head (but no shower curtain)
- Pepe whips egg whites in the always-outdoor kitchen (see the burners on the left)
- The tiny pantry and steps to the rooftop, where the laundry is usually hung to dry
- Very typical dish drainer in these parts – a laundry basket. Rather resourceful.
- The kitchen sink – the only sink. That’s maiz soaking in the bucket on the left.
- The wood-burning stove, which the wife lights and uses every single day
- Close-up of the stove
- Making tortillas in some very strong wind
- Our Guatemalan “mother” hard at work making tortillas. She’s adorable.
- Dusty and empty backyard. But plenty of space for future dreams.
- The machine that turns the maiz into masa (which is at another location and the wife pays to use everyday)
- Putting the maiz into the machine
- Pushing it down…
- …and out comes masa, or the dried ground corn used to make tortillas
- Tortillas cooking on the outdoor plancha
- An example of our host mother’s handiwork – a tamale inside a leaf and tied up with a string fashioned from another leaf
- Laki, one of the resident canines, relaxing in the backyard
